Why Is Professional Fireplace Installation So Important?
A big question many have when investing in a new stove, insert, or fireplace product is whether or not they can do the installation themselves. We get it – there are probably loads of video tutorials and how-to articles saying that it’s easy. And not only can you get it done quickly, but you’ll save money on labor too…right?
Not so fast. The truth is that you’re always better off hiring an expert for this type of work – and we’re not just saying that! Here’s why you should leave it to the pros:
- Safety First: When it comes to operating a fireplace in your home, safety needs to come first – otherwise, gas leaks, fire hazards, smoke backup, and more will be a risk. A professional will ensure that your system is properly vented and that all components are properly in place. Even a small mishap can lead to big issues.
- Proper Clearances: Installing a fireplace too close to combustible materials can lead to fire hazards. Professionals know the clearance requirements and adhere to all proper safety codes.
- Ensuring Efficiency: Let’s say your system isn’t posing any risks. Great! …but is it operating as efficiently as it can be? A professionally installed fireplace is simply more likely to operate efficiently, providing better heat output and reducing overall energy costs.
- Code Compliance: Professionals are familiar with local codes and regulations, ensuring your installation meets all legal requirements. They can also help with handling any necessary permits, saving you time and ensuring that your installation is up to all proper standards.
- Warranty Protection: Many fireplace manufacturers require professional installation to validate the warranty. DIY installation might void your warranty, leaving you unprotected and uncovered should damages occur down the line.
- Aesthetics & Customization: A professional installation ensures that your fireplace looks great and integrates seamlessly with your home’s design.
All in all, you can’t beat the peace of mind that comes with a professional installation – and not to mention, proper installation extends the life of your fireplace, preventing premature wear and costly repairs.
Choosing a professional to install your fireplace is an investment in safety, efficiency, and the long-term enjoyment of your home’s heating feature. Count on us – we’re here to help.

What Can You Expect During a Chimney Inspection?
Just like professional installation is important, so is booking annual maintenance – namely a yearly chimney and fireplace inspection.
What most people don’t realize about chimney systems is that they’re more complex than just being a tube that sends smoke out of your home. They have many components that must be functioning properly in order to safely heat your home. During a chimney inspection for a fireplace, a chimney technician will inspect the following:
- Brick & Mortar (if applicable): Brick and mortar that is damaged or deteriorating can cause moisture to seep inside your chimney. We all know moisture in a home is a big problem. Our chimney technician will check for any signs of cracking, flaking, or crumbling.
- Chimney Cap: These are found at the very top of your chimney and are important in keeping rain, snow, debris, and even animals out of your chimney. If there is no chimney cap, it’s important to get one. But these also tend to deteriorate over time or even rust.
- Chimney Crown: Not to be confused with a chimney cap, a chimney crown also sits on top of the chimney. A crown is a slab of concrete that acts as a barrier between the inside of your chimney and the outside world. For prefab chimneys, a metal chase cover will take the place of a chimney crown.
- Flashing: This is the thin metal material installed where your chimney meets the roof. Flashing acts as a waterproof seal to prevent leaks within the roof and chimney masonry. Over time, the flashing may begin to deteriorate or even pull away from the chimney.
- Flue Liner: This is the vertical channel that carries all the smoke and harmful gases up and out of your home. This area can become coated with soot, or even creosote, and must be cleaned regularly to eliminate any potential chimney fire or carbon monoxide risks.
- Damper: This is the piece that opens and closes your firebox to the chimney. Having a properly working damper is one of the most important parts of owning a chimney because without it, cold air would flow into your home during the winter.
- Firebox: This is where the fire is actually made. The constant exposure to high temperatures can sometimes cause the walls of the firebox to wear out and crack over time. Without repairs, you run the risk of harmful gases and carbon monoxide leaking into your home.
It’s important to know all of the different parts of a chimney and their purpose so you can spot problems when they arise.
